About the Author
Arunabha Ghosh is a lead member of technical staff in the Wireless Communications Group in AT&T Laboratories. He received his B.S. with highest distinction from the Indian Institute of Technology at Kanpur in 1992 and his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign in 1998. As a technical member at AT&T Labs, Dr. Ghosh’s primary area of research is mobile wireless systems, with particular emphasis on MIMO-OFDM systems. Dr. Ghosh has worked extensively in the area of closed-loop single-user and multiuser MIMO solutions for technologies such as LTE and WiMAX and has been an active participant in many standards bodies such as 3GPP, IEEE, and WiMAX Forum.

 

Jun Zhang is a visiting assistant professor in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He received his B.Eng. in electronic engineering from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 2004, his M.Phil. in information engineering from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 2006, and his Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2009. He was an intern at AT&T Labs in the summers of 2007 and 2008.

 

Jeffrey G. Andrews is an associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, where he is the director of the Wireless Networking and Communications Group. He received his B.S. in engineering with high distinction from Harvey Mudd College, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University. Dr. Andrews has industry experience at companies including Qualcomm, Intel, and Microsoft, and is the co-recipient of three IEEE best paper awards and the National Science Foundation CAREER Award.

 

Rias Muhamed is a director of business development with the AT&T Corporate Strategy and Development Team. His area of focus is on developing and incubating new business applications and services for AT&T using emerging technologies. He was previously with AT&T Labs, where he led technology assessment of a variety of wireless communication systems. He received his B.S. in electrical engineering from Pondicherry University, India in 1990; his M.S. in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech in 1996; and his M.B.A. from St. Edward University in Austin in 2000.

Good info, overly detailed

I am an RF Engineer, tasked with optimizing the radio link between the phone and the tower (or in LTE terminology, the User Equipment and e-Node B). Admittedly, this is the first BOOK about LTE I have read. Without other perspective, I give it a 3 star rating because of how useful it will be to me in my role. This is a great reference text for LTE--detailed as it is--on the background considerations and ALL the possibilities and thought that went into the LTE standard, but it's really over my head! It has little information, probably quite understandably, about vendor implementation and how to solve practical issues. What I needed to learn from the book could be reduced to 50 pages instead of 383, that's why I'll keep it on my shelf as a reference text, just in case. But otherwise I've taken extensive notes, which is really all I need.

The author(s) is a good teacher; he keeps re-expressing relevant points previously covered at the appropriate time in each lesson, and gives good summaries at the end of each chapter. The book is thoroughly indexed, and the text of each chapter points the reader to where other matters are more fully explained in other chapters/sections. Though it has a very useful list of acronyms, about 10 important acronyms are not on the list (an oversight by the editors). But the book could really benefit (I could really benefit) from also having a glossary, it would be worth extending the page count to 400. I suggest others on my level take advantage of the authors pedagogical style and the book's index in the following manner: start with the summary at the end of each chapter and if you see something you want to dig into, then go into the chapter for more details or use the index to find the actual lesson. By this means you can extract the most information with the least investment of time. Not all books are written well enough to use (or trust) this method to cover the material. This one is.

Excellent book on LTE

I ordered this book in Kindle format, but read it on the Cloud Reader app. The book is an excellent introduction to the lower layers of the LTE standard, explaining many things that are scattered throughout several standards documents. It can provide one with a firm basic understanding of the way LTE works, which makes reading through the standards documents for the PHY, MAC, etc. that much easier.

We use this book and Goldsmith's book as textbooks for wireless communications. It gives a brief but clear description while Goldsmith gives a detailed calculation which is a perfect combination.

Dr. Leatherman spends his time seeing patients in his busy Excelsior Springs, Missouri and Shawnee Mission, Kansas chiropractic clinics and educating on the topics of chiropractic care, hormones, and natural health at seminars from Atlanta to San Diego. An avid advocate for women s health, Dr. Leatherman has made it his prime objective to help as many people as he can live the lives they were gifted to live. Raised in Ponca City, Oklahoma and educated at Oklahoma State University and Cleveland Chiropractic College, Chris Leatherman, D.C., FASA studied under the tutelage of Dr. Richard Yennie, recipient of the World Health Organization s Man of the Year award. reading for wellness

"Hormone Basics" by Dr. Chris Leatherman is a comprehensive approach to understanding hormones, yet easy to read and comprehend. The reading goes quickly. If you are "book marker type" you will soon have this book filled with stars, arrows and exclamation points. Learning what messes with the female hormones is the first step towards mental and physical health. The sections on environmental toxins and detoxifying were especially informative.

An amazing book that all women (and men) should read!

I own a copy of this book and I recommend it at least once a week to a friend of family member. This book is a perfect gift for all young people to read about what is going on with their bodies. Dr. Leatherman does an amazing job of laying out why things happen, and why the woman should trust her body. He also does a dynamic job of showing what artificial hormones can do to disrupt the body. I wish I had read this book 15 years earlier, before I allowed myself to become medicated.

Bill (Snakebite) Sanner's ordinary life has been filled with one extraordinary circumstance after another. Striking out on his own at a young age, he was forced to make adult decisions about many things that led to nine years of military service to his country through the Navy. Decades later, after telling his "sea stories" all day at one particularly entertaining (and long) birthday party, he decided to write them down while he still remembered them. One of the funniest and reflective submarine books I’ve had in my hands in many years

“Submarine stories exist in untold numbers. Most of them tell about great weapons systems, strategies and tactics. Not so here. These stories tell about some of the men of the submarine fleet. We served in the 1970s. Unlike our brothers-in-arms serving in Vietnam, we weren’t shot at, starved or stationed in disease-infested hotspots. That’s because we served our country about 500 feet below the surface of the ocean.” excerpt from the book
I was a Torpedoman who served on the same boat as the author during the time frame he is talking about. The excerpt you’ve just read was my introduction to one of the funniest and reflective submarine books I’ve had in my hands in many years. Nostalgia reigned during the time I was reading it.
My first thought when Bill requested that I read, and possibly review, his new book was “Well, here’s another load of sea stories just like the rest I’ve seen.” That thought vanished after the first chapter. From the moment I began reading I could not put it down. I caught myself laughing out loud and being looked at strangely. I found myself transported back onboard the boat and remembering many of the same events happening in my life as I lived out my dream of being a Submariner. The fact of knowing the author and many of those men he wrote about definitely enhanced the reading experience.
It doesn’t matter if your rode diesel, fast boat or boomer, you will find yourself recalling your time on the boats and how much you enjoyed it. Bill has done a great job of weaving the mundane and the excitement of living below the ocean’s surface with 150 other men. Additionally, he has pointed out the trials and tribulations of our families who were left behind with no means of two-way communication during those patrols. The experiences of his wife, Dee, added a great deal to the flow of the book.
Last but not least, each of us has made many lifetime friendships at the commands we served on. These friendships are sometimes closer than those with our blood relatives. Bill has written much about that special friendship with Smitty which began in ‘A’ school. It’s the kind of friendship all ‘Brothers of the Dolphin’ can understand.
This is a book that you MUST HAVE on your shelf. You will read, reread and then reread these stories many times. Thank you, Bill, for allowing me to be one of the first to read this story of our lives as young men!

This is a humorous series vignettes in the life of a submariner starting with his high school graduation and entry into the Navy and ending with his Honorable Discharge. It is easy reading and can be enjoyed by anyone with or without military, especially Navy, especially submarine,, experience as it does not get into technical details of submarine life nor operation. Everyone can appreciate the comical situations Snakebite find himself in and the crazy ways in which he deals with them. The book is also well adorned with pictures and drawings of people, places, and things having to do with submarine life. So, rig for dive and prepare to ventilate as Snakebite and Stonefinger set sail for hilarity.

Buyer Beware

When I first purchased this book I thought it would be an instructional guide on how to program generic robots, but when I got it all the chapthers relate to a specific robot (iRobot, Lego NXT, etc). This made it frustrating to me because the author expects you to have this robot if you want to follow along with the guide. In my opinion, all the chapthers should be step up to run in the simulation with text on how to transfer your code to the robot if you have one. Also the authors style of writing is poor for an instructional guide. Critical steps should be bolded in the text to signify that this is a critical step. There was often times where I would get unexpected results doing the guide because a critical step was buried in a large paragraph. This book is not for somebody that doesn't have a background in C# (which I do) or at least a similar programming language. Granted teaching generic programming would be beyond the scope of this book, but if you don't have any programming background this book is not for you.

Glad to finally have a book for MSRS

This book is a good start but I can't wait for the next edition (if there is one). The author attempted too much coverage for the limited number of pages (a little over 200). I have completed all of the Microsoft Tutorials for MSRS and this book is a refreshing change. The author begins with coverage of SERVICES and does not include any illustrations. Microsoft Tutorials and Powerpoint presentations have several great illustrations on SERVICES. Also, the coverage of SERVICES is completed in an orderly manner but not in the same order used in the coding chapters (chapters 5 and later). There are the expected typos, as you expect in a new book. A couple can cause frustration until you figure out what happened.

I will say that MSRS books are very much needed. While MSRS is not a huge software product, it contains several new concepts for many programmers. I have a background in C, C++, C#, and VB. MSRS is best when using C#.

In summary:
1. I would have liked to have had a thicker book (like the one coming out in June from other authors.
2. The author of this book made the decision to only do superficial coverage of MSRS subjects such as Simulation and VPL which I believe will be used quite a bit in academic enviorments and more everywhere in the future. The VPL feature of C# code generation is important and deserved move attention.
3. The author's style of writing is great and very readable. I wish her well and look forward to a 2nd edition.

Not for beginners

I applaude the effort, but this book is written for people with programming and robotics experience. There is much effort in explaining what but not how. At times I felt I was reading the MS verbage.

The greatest benefit of MSRS is the Simulation feature. You can get your feet wet in Robotics for free. That should have been the focus for the book. Everything should have been reference from there.

I knew I was in trouble when the first chapter didn't make a robot move and spent most of the time on concepts.

I was hoping for step by step tour of MSRS, but I think the value in this book is after you out of the novice stage of MSRS.

John E. Kelly III is senior vice president and director of IBM Research, one of the world's largest commercial research organizations, with more than 3,000 scientists and technical employees operating in twelve laboratories in ten countries. He also helps guide IBM's overall technical strategy. Kelly's top priorities as head of IBM Research are to stimulate innovation in key areas of information technology and quickly bring those innovations into the marketplace.

Steve Hamm is a writer and videographer for IBM after working in business and technology journalism. Most recently, he was a senior writer at BusinessWeek magazine. An engaging guide to the future of knowledge, sensing, decision-making and discovery

Imagine this. The baby is sleeping upstairs. One of those monitors in her room plays her noises down to the kitchen. The parents can hear her thrash and gurgle. But those sounds are in the background. More prominent is a computer voice that announces: "The baby wet her diapers at 1:23. She's been awake for four minutes." She cries. Is it time to nurse her already? No, the computer says. Her stomach hurts.

I picked up this idea from Smart Machines: IBM's Watson and the Era of Cognitive Computing. It is co-written by John Kelly, the director of IBM Research and Steve Hamm, my friend and former colleague at BusinessWeek.

I wrote a book about 2011 Watson (Final Jeopardy). So you might think I would find this material familiar. But it's a very useful, concise and engaging guide to the future of computing--which is also the future of knowledge, sensing, decision-making and discovery. I read it in about two hours. It led me from employment opportunities for Watson to frontiers of Big Data and the physics of new computing. It's hard to summarize the future of cognitive computing, but these two sentences come pretty close: "In the programmable-computing era, people have to adapt to the way computers work. In the cognitive era, computers will adapt to people."

Returning briefly to the baby example, the idea is that apps will eventually be able to crunch enough data to decode their noises and, effectively, put words in their mouths. Of course, not all babies will use the same noises. I imagine that the program will come with a standard template, and that parents will have ways to correct the machine's early mistakes, helping it to customize its analysis for each baby. And as those fixes make their way to the cloud service, it will grow more sophisticated, just like Google Voice or Siri.

Another similar challenge, I imagine, will be to interpret the noises and gestures of animals, and to get them also to talk to us. This animal analysis could probably benefit from smell sensors, another innovation previewed in the book. Such sensors could pick up molecules of chemicals signaling an animal's fear, confusion, hunger and sexual drive.

Do we want a machine announcing that Rover is hungry or horny or needs to go out for one reason or another? That could be too much information. But the marketplace will iron out those issues. For now, we at least know from a very good IBM book that the technology is en route.

Disappointing and simplistic...

Very disappointing. This book reads like a primer on 'computers' for non-technical people circa 1985. It is simplistic and filled with speculative use cases of the most cliched kind - they even have a varient of the 'find an italian restaurant' use case in there. My guess is that this essentially intended as a kind of brochure for IBM services aimed at technically illiterate government procurement people. The only good thing I can say about this book is that the term 'cognitive computing' is a brilliant label for this new world of machine learning, big data and sensors/apps that is just beginning - all that stuff is obviously very real but you won't learn much about it here. I really wish Kelly and Hamm had been able to break through the IBM rah-rah and give us some real insight into how IBM is contributing to this new world.

(Way) Beyond Watson: what to expect in "smart machines"

In Smart Machines, authors John Kelly III and Steve Hamm provide the general reader with a well-written, interesting guide to the future of cognitive computing, "smart machines" humans can use to "penetrate complexity and comprehend the world around us so that we can make better decisions."
The authors describe how computers work and how many experts imagine computers will have to work in the future to achieve "smartness". They discuss tools that are being developed today, current research that looks auspicious for future developments, and areas for future research that they believe to hold promise. The emphasis is on work done at IBM, but efforts by others are also mentioned. A central theme to the new technology is how to cope with the vast increase in data available, and the main approach discussed is various ways to move processing closer to the data to eliminate the time lost in moving the data to the processor.
Kelly and Hamm envision a cognitive system as analogous to Russian nesting dolls and devote separate chapters to each. The layers are:
Chapter 2: how humans interact with computers and get them to do what we want,
Chapter 3: how we organize and interpret data,
Chapter 4: (possibly my favorite chapter) how we enhance computers to have the machine equivalent of ALL of our senses, not just the obvious sight and hearing, but also touch, taste, and smell.
Chapter 5: how we put together the physical components of a computer, the computer architecture, and
Chapter 6: how we build the core components to manipulate matter at the molecular and atomic scale, exploit nanotechnology, and invent a new physics of computing in order to increase processing speeds significantly.
The final chapter imagines how cognitive technology can help run the city of the future.
This is a survey of a rather large field (or fields); readers who become interested in some aspect will want to follow up references to get details. To those not familiar with work on intelligent machines it is a fascinating introduction. Those who have already read in the field are not likely to learn anything new, but the material is structured in a way that brings coherence to a subject that specialists tend to see only in bits and pieces. How good is their vision? Come back in 25 years, and our smart machines will help us decide.

Daniel J. Siegel, MD is a graduate of Harvard Medical School and completed his postgraduate medical education at UCLA with training in pediatrics and child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry. He is currently a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, founding co-director of UCLA’s Mindful Awareness Research Center, founding co-investigator at the UCLA Center for Culture, Brain and Development, and executive director of the Mindsight Institute, an educational center devoted to promoting insight, compassion, and empathy in individuals, families, institutions, and communities. Dr. Siegel’s psychotherapy practice spans thirty years, and he has published extensively for the professional audience. What a rich book!

Wow--what a rich book! However, don't expect to get through this book quickly (you won't want to) because it's chock-full of useful information. It is complete with up-to-date research presented by some of the most cutting edge scientists/clinicians.

While the book is written by eleven individuals (one person writes each chapter), it is both thorough and integrated. I can only imagine how much effort and intention it took to have the chapter's authors working with each other. Many authors refer to the other chapters' content within the book, which helps to pull it all together for the reader (e.g. if one author used a term that was different than another's, but represented a similar idea, the author tended to point this out).

The first six chapters of the book address the neuroscience and developmental aspects of emotion. While these chapters will be particularly dense for readers less familiar with neuroscience, each contained valuable, up-to-date information that is worth becoming familiar with. (I also refer readers to Norman Doidge's book on the brain, which is fascinating and easily digested.) The last five chapters focus on specific clinical applications, including individual, couples, and family work. These authors each gave beautiful excerpts of actual cases which bring to life the concepts addressed in the chapters.

I found the book to be an incredible presentation of understanding the concept of emotion and as the title states "the healing power of emotion". It's worth both reading and referring to for many years to come.

If you can buy just one book - make it this one.

I loved this book. It is an extraordinary 5 star buffet of articles by cutting edge neurobiology researchers and psychotherapy clinicians, a who's who in the field. Both the articles on the brain and psychotherapy are consumately well written, and clinical articles have great case illustrations. The psychotherapies described here are moving beyond exploration of pathologies to the transformative experiences where joy, new energy, and delight become possible; that and helping people regulate their dysregulated nervous system. This book is a weaving together of two disciplines that demonstrate what this new frontier looks like. If you have one book to buy --- make it this one. Judi Goodman, LICSW

Brilliant and accessible

The book is a fascinating collection of papers--all connected, yet each with its own distinct flavor reflecting the unique expertise of the individual author. As a clinician who does not have a neuroscience background, I found the book both accessible and highly relevant to clinical practice. I have read these authors separately so am thrilled the meta perspective presented explicitly in the introduction, as well as the weaving together of the concepts that occurs throughout the chapters.
