Great clarity of thought

I liked this book for its simple use of language, it's point blank no nonsense approach to enlightenment, and also for its great clarity of thought. It was an all inclusive kind of book. It starts out with the authors personal story of seeking and his eventual awakening, then it moves on to go in-depth into the nitty grittys of ego and the true Self. The later chapters discuss moving beyond various distractions which can occur on a spiritual path, and there is also a couple of chapters in question and answer format, which helped the clarity furthur. The main theme of the book is about what the author calls "attentive presence" which is similar to living in the now, but the way he puts this across makes it almost like a "science of mind and Spirit" which made it very exact and really helpful indeed.

At one with sloppiness

The author appears to be at One with the Absolute Self.

However, I would have thought that his Ever-Presence would have alerted him to the poor grammar and poor punctuation in his text. Maybe he could not afford the services of a proof-reader, having sacrificed the material world for a world where such material details are not important.

His narrations are well worth reading, nonetheless, because he is able to describe the basic experience of being in the present, however long he may be able to experience it. As with all of us seeking to know One's true Self, it is our sanskara that needs changing, and he has related his way of changing his sanskara (& therefore his karma), which is a way that is far simpler than what many established and traditional teachings describe in their esoteric and convoluted procedures and methods.

All things being relative (not equal) in our experience of the Universe's evolution in this regard, we are born into bodies and circumstances that determine how each of our individually unique experiences begins. As he repeatedly exhorts those who might be sincere in their attempts, "let the journey begin!"

His descriptions of being at One seems to revolve around what could be described in the Mahayana Buddhist sources as being "jnana", which is non-conceptualising or non-dual awareness. Very little of the other mental states or functions are described.

My perceptions of his accounts are that he is able to maintain his Universal Presence to some degree, because most of us are able to experience at times in our lives what he describes.

I took away one star for the rating because of repeated mistakes in his punctuation. I would recommend that he read "Eat, Shoots, & Leaves" by Lynne Truss [ISBN-13: 978-0007329069 ] before embarking on relating his novel experience again next time.

good overview of 30 years work on fundamental theology

This is the latest is a series of six books by Fr. O'Collins, an Aussie Jesuit, explicitly dealing with the sub-discipline of fundamental theology . It is an excellent summary of the main themes of all his earlier work on Fundamental Theology while also adding some newer themes, such as the engagement with neo-atheism.

FYI Fundamental theology is a field that deals with the sources of theology: the scriptures, tradition, and magisterium and their credibility as a foundation for theology. It is found mainly in Catholic theological circles, but has become important in non-Catholic circles as well more recently. Fundamental theology's apologetic function has morphed into a concern as well for the human subject as receiver of revelation, the role and significant of history, and ultimately the nature and factors that lead to faith.

O'Collins has been reflecting on these issues for over 30 years, returning to some central ideas that concern him: the centrality of Christ, the nature of history in faith, and the experiencing subject who comes to faith. Each of his various writings on this field return to these ideas but tend to deepen each time around. His thought is heavily influence by Karl Rahner's transcendental Thomism, as well as the ecumenism of Jacques Dupris S.J. among others.

O'Collins purpose in writing this book is to keep fundamental theology alive while "developing further" his insights into his earlier themes while also adding some new reflection. This book, like all the others he wrote on this topic, does not try to create a comprehensive system, though the ideas interconnect at times.

O'Collins is well versed in the field (a recognized expert) and well versed as well in a wide variety of topics and authors in various western languages. His thought process is clear and his explanations help delineate the various perspectives involved in a given issue well. Even if you do not agree with his perspective, you will walk away with a clear understanding and broader perspective of the issue than before.

I recommend this book for the specialist and anyone with a thorough training in theology. It can be rather dense and technical, though necessarily so. He has other less technical books should you be interested, though none on fundamental theology that I am aware.

I found the price prohibitive and look forward to a cheaper paperback should I decide to use this as a text for students.

A first-rate overview of fundamental theology

In this wide ranging volume O'Collins seeks to lay out a program for relaunching fundamental theology. He certainly is qualified for the task given that this is his fourth book on the topic. Over thirteen chapters O'Collins covers a wide range of issues including introducing fundamental theology (chapter 1), God (chapter 2), anthropology (chapter 3), revelation (chapter 4), Jesus (chapters 5 and 6), faith (chapter 7), tradition (chapter 8), the Bible (chapters 9 and 10), the church (chapter 11), Christ and other religions (chapter 12) and theological style and method (chapter 13).

Given the wide ranging nature of the book it is inevitable that O'Collins will be somewhat selective in his treatment of topics. Even so, an author of a book like this is bound to be charged with oversights. On that score I'll lodge my complaint that O'Collins only dedicated a page to discuss metaphor and the nature of religious language (335-6). Given the enormous attention this topic has received in contemporary theology, this seems a significant gap.

Wide-ranging books of this sort also provide fertile soil for reviewer quibbles. On that score I shall avail myself of the privilege of lodging a few of my own. To begin with, I note my dissatisfaction with O'Collins' endorsement of reduplicative predication in Christology without even acknowledging the serious concerns that such formulations are quasi-Nestorian.

Other quibbles are directed at suggestive points that remain underdeveloped. To note one example, while O'Collins unapologetically affirms biblical authority and inspiration, he senses no need to exonerate the problematic moral perspectives present in scripture, be they in the imprecatory psalms (220) or Israel's holy wars (242). While I agree with this general approach to these texts, O'Collins leaves the reader wishing he would explain more fully the role he sees these texts playing in an inspired canon.

O'Collins leaves the reader wishing for more clarity in other areas as well, and some of them are significant. For example, while O'Collins affirms the post-resurrection appearances, he qualifies that "This is not to suggest that when the risen Jesus appeared he was an exterior object to be perceived and recognized by anyone who happened to be present, irrespective of their personal dispositions." (151) A layperson may be forgiven for worrying that this is theological doubletalk for a denial of the resurrection. Consequently, O'Collins should explain more fully what he means here.

This leads to another concern. O'Collins frequently refers to the role fundamental theology plays in providing justification for various theological claims (for example, see 97). However, this leaves him vulnerable to the subordinationist charge that he has made theology subject to an external source of justification. To take one example, O'Collins lists five criteria for determining the authentic sayings and actions of Jesus. (100) He seems to view these criteria as a necessary grid to determine which gospel passages Christians can reasonably accept as historical (102). However, not only is the veracity of some of these criteria questionable (the criterion of discontinuity, in particular), the deeper issue concerns why a Christian cannot accept the gospels in their entirety as historical absent defeaters to that historicity.

My final quibble focuses on chapter 13 where O'Collins describes three approaches to theology as science, ethics (or social justice) and worship. While O'Collins argues rightly that we need all three styles, he then suggests that these three styles correspond to correspondence, pragmatic and coherence theories of truth. This is a case of over-stylizing your argument. Theories of truth are totalitarian in that each admits to no rivals. If a statement is true because it corresponds to reality (as is surely the case) then it is not true because it has pragmatic value or coherence.

As I said these are quibbles and whatever the weaknesses of "Rethinking Fundamental Theology", they are far outweighed by the strengths. O'Collins' discussions of topics like revelation, inspiration, ecclesiology and Christology are nuanced and, in the best reflection of a post-Vatican 2 world, generously ecumenical. (Indeed, the final word in the final chapter comes courtesy of Martin Luther.) This is an enjoyable and challenging book and it deserves a wide readership.

I have read many books on dowsing and the art of using the pendulum. This is one I would not recommend on any level. There are many other books that are so much better. "Pendulum Magic" by R. I don't usually review textbooks, but this one is amazing. I bought this for my class and found it extremely easy to read, fairly unbiased and informative. It was good enough that I finished the few chapters we didn't get through in class just because it was such a good read.

Wowza!

What a terrific tale! Set in the Seattle area around the life of Jason Wade, a reporter for the Seattle Mirror. This story unfolds around first the murder of a teenage prostitute followed a few months later by the murder of a beloved nun who has served the homeless, downtrodden & prison inmates for years. The complexities of this novel are so intricate and well written I couldn't put it down once I started. The murderer touched so many lives directly
and indirectly starting with a bank robbery gone bad 25 years ago where an 8 year old boy was held hostage and then killed in the crossfire. The arresting officers were Jasons' dad and his partner. The bank robber did 25yrs in the state pen and upon release all hell starts to break lose involving the hooker, the nun, Jasons dad, a young boy facing surgery for a brain tumor and his mom, folks in the soup kitchen where the nun worked not to mention the Seattle homicide division headed by lead detective Grace Garner, who just happens to be an ex- girlfriend of our reporter Jason who has been assigned to cover the whole story! Needless to say what follows is a wild rollercoaster ride of suspense and intrigue that had me breathless and on the edge of my seat the entire time it took me to read this marvelous creation from start to finish! Rick Mofina, you are one hell of a good writer! I will be gobbling up more of your books in my immediate future. To any readers out there who enjoy a good crime thriller tou can't go wrong with a Rick Mofina book! #1 R.F. fan, Merrilyn McGloin!

Who would kill a saint?

I really enjoyed this book and loved the Bible references as they were so apt in the case of Anne Brexton, the nun!! Who could possibly have killed such a wonderful and dedicated person? Well, I had to read to find out what happened. Great way to start the book – absolutely titillated my curiosity! Had to be more to the story than happenstance! Did enjoy the characters of Jason Wade and his father. I could actually visualize Jason Wade as Rick Mofina back in the days when he was working as a crime reporter– strange huh! (Smile) One thing that did bother me – really bothered me – and maybe I would have been the killer – had it been ME that was working as a journalist.... Are editors really like that??? Grrrr - would make me crazy! Oh well, on with the story... having been in the convent myself, I learned that there are all types of women that turn to God and none of them are saints, nor do they turn into saints. We all strive to do our best no matter what careers we choose. Anne Brexton was striving to atone for her past life. Sometimes, our past lives catch up to us instead of staying behind as we hope. But we are all human and we all have human failings unfortunately. I felt bad that she worked so hard to atone but still paid the penalty. A Perfect Grave was a perfect title for this book. Loved the way the sub plots all came together or should I say, twisted together – neat!! A great read!!!

I received this book for free through a discount sent to me by Bookbub.
This was a very good book. The characters were clear and believable, though I would have liked to see Henry Wade fleshed out a little more. Had his character and situation been more fully developed, this book would have garnered 5 stars from me. I actually rate it about 4.5. The crime was complex and layered, revealed in stages, but I was not ever confused or bored with it. I found the character of the Nun very complicated yet sympathetic. The author clearly hints from the very beginning that the Sister is not who she seems or claims to be.
I am not an expert on crime thrillers, as epic fantasy is my usual genre, but I personally enjoyed this book, and I recommend it.
