About the Author

Poppy Evans is an award-winning writer and graphic designer who lives in Park Hills Kentucky, a suburb of Cincinnati, OH. She is the former art director of Screen Printing and American Music Teacher magazines, and former managing editor of HOW magazine.

Aaris Sherin is an educator, writer and designer based in New York City. She is currently assistant professor of graphic design at St. John's University in Queens, New York, where she teaches both history and studio classes. She holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from Rochester Institute of Technology.

Irina Lee is a graphic designer, professor, and writer based in New York City. Her professional experience includes film and video production, interactive media, print, packaging, user interface design and editorial design projects for corporate and non-profit clients. She teaches at the School of Visual Arts and the State University of New York at Farmingdale College, School of Art + Graphic Design.

Cobbled together by publisher

This book contains a wide variety of detailed information related to graphic design, particularly for print. On the plus side, I quite liked the section on grids; I found it succinct and insightful.

On the down side, some sections seem hastily assembled. For example, a new chapter on Standard Forms and Contracts was cobbled together from a series of books from the same publisher--Managing the Design Process by Terry Lee Stone--and includes page references copied verbatim from these books, which make absolutely no sense in this context. (Did anyone proofread this?) This type of content cannibalization suggests the book--or at least this 2013 edition--was driven primarily by the agenda of the publisher, rather than by an author's hand. In fact, the book is part of a series of `reference + specification' titles spanning a variety of disciplines: architecture, interior design, industrial design, graphic design. It appears to be an assembly-line job.

The end of the book includes a CMYK Process Color Finder, which occupies a full 90 pages, or about 25% of the book. Its wayfinding system is inconsistent at the start, and midway through, two pages of color combinations are missing. Elsewhere, in a discussion of scanning resolutions for digital displays, the authors confusingly suggest scanning images intended for screen output at 72dpi: `This is the best image reproduction you can achieve, because a computer monitor's resolution is just 72 dpi.' This advice is out-of-date and makes little sense to begin with.

A lot of design flaws

The content of the book is pretty good, although there's a lot of wasted pages in the last 1/3 - process colour swatches printed on one side of each page.

However, that's not my biggest concern with the book. I found numerous design and grammatical errors in the books such as references to incorrect page numbers and line breaks where they shouldn't be (look at the "About the Author's" section). The authors should consider hiring an editor next time they decide to write a book.

It's a shame, really, as it could be a very good book.

All There Is

Please read this book. There is nothing derogatory about "being green" and loving creation. It is a short text which wraps a ribbon around ourselves as human, created, spiritual, and most importantly, as just one cog in the works of Creation. Joanna Macy is never preachy - she's a Buddhist! - she is sincere, loving, wise and whole. We are "greening ourselves" all over the world! The earth is asking us to speak up, not to hide behind chainsaws and investment portfolios, fracking and driving our energy on the blood of the earth. The legs we cut down are our own, the water we poison is the 99% of which our human body is constituted, the money in our bank is paper. The earth has given us everything we need, and the West just sees the earth as something separate - not as the All There Is it is. Read this.

Richard Béliveau is a leading authority in the field of cancer research. He holds the Chair in the Prevention and Treatment of Cancer at the University of Quebec at Montreal, where he is a professor of biochemistry. Beef with lemongrass

Preparation time: 20 minutes
Difficulty: easy

Beef with lemongrass is delicious with perfumed steamed rice seasoned with fish sauce.

175 ml (3/4 cup) vegetable oil
160 g (1 cup) onions, finely sliced
2 tsp garlic, minced
2 tbsp lemongrass, chopped
2 tsp fresh ginger, minced
160 g (1 cup) green onions, finely sliced
500 g (1 lb) beef, Chinese fondue cut
60 ml (1/4 cup) fish sauce (nuoc-­mâm or nam pla)
2 tsp sugar
2 tbsp sesame seeds, toasted
Salt and freshly ground pepper
Several leaves of fresh coriander

Heat the wok over high heat, add the oil and cook the onions, garlic, lemongrass, ginger, green onions, and beef over medium-­high heat for 1 to 2 minutes.

Add the fish sauce, sugar, and sesame seeds. Season with salt and pepper to taste, and cook for 1 to 2 minutes over medium-­high heat.

Serve immediately, garnishing with the coriander leaves.

Oat and ginger shortbread cookies

24 cookies
Preparation time: 1 h 15
Difficulty: average

70 g (3/4 cup) rolled oats
240 g (1 cup) butter
240 g (1 cup) brown sugar
1 tsp ground ginger
225 g (1 3/4 cups) all-­purpose unbleached flour
30 to 60 g (1/2 to 1 cup) crystallized ginger, finely chopped

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

Chop the rolled oats in a food processor and set aside.

Mix the butter and brown sugar together until creamy.

Add the ground ginger, rolled oats, flour, and crystallized ginger.

Pack the mixture into a large rectangular 30 x 25 cm (12 x 10 in) cake pan with your hands.

Using a knife, make incisions in the form of squares, diamonds, triangles, or rectangles on the surface of the mixture.

Bake in the oven for 30 to 35 minutes, until the top is golden.

Cut the bars along the incision marks while still hot, set aside and let cool completely before serving.

Nice looking, difficult to USE

I would have liked to give this book 5 stars, but it has serious flaws for a cook book. I have read Anti-Cancer, the book on which these recipes are based. A whole half of this book is dedicated to reiterating what foods can fight cancer. The second half is the "cookbook". The major problem with the ease of use of the cookbook is that the index is useless! Browsing through the recipes, I noticed at least 4 recipes that feature lentils. When I was ready to make some Lentil and Carrot Soup, I open the book's index to find the recipe. In the index, Lentil is not listed. Nor is Carrot. Nor Soup! Now I've got to flip through the beautiful photos and other recipes hoping to come across the one I want. That's a disappointment. The editor of this book needs a different job.

Worse than Useless

I am amazed that this book was even written by the same authors as the excellent "Foods to Fight Cancer". The first half of the book does have some very useful information but starting with the very first recipe things go downhill quickly. The first four ingredients (of a six ingredient recipe) are sugar, oil, eggs and white flour. These are foods that actually promote cancer - as anyone who has read the outstanding book "Anti-Cancer" will easily see. The wheat bran and blueberries that finish out these muffins cannot possibly compensate for the harm of the first four ingredients. What follows are more recipes full of sugar, oil, flour and animal products (such as cheese and beef) all of which are known to accelerate cancer growth. I love their other book but this one is likely to do more harm than good. For a much better book on cancer nutrition read "The Cancer Survivors Guide" by Neal Barnard and Jennifer K. Reilly or "The China Study" by T. Colin Campbell PhD.

With this information you can prepare a diet that will certainly help you live longer whether or not you have cancer. About the Author
James Kozubek is a staff scientist at the Brigham and Women's Hospital with affiliation to the Broad Institute of Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Kozubek is also an established journalist whose science writing has appeared in The Boston Globe, The Atlantic and Scientific American, amongst others.

A comprehensive, up-to-date look at genetic modification

I enjoyed this book because it is an up-to-date look at genetic modification. It explains all the major methods including zinc finger technology, TALENS and CRISPR-Cas9. However, a prior knowledge of biology is required to understand a lot of what author Jim Kozubek discusses. His discussions are comprehensive and he gets a lot of his materials through interviews. This is very interesting but some of the quotes are so long I forgot who he was interviewing. Sometimes he goes into too much detail and I would see the trees, not the forest. Kozubek also takes several detours that detract from the book. His discussion of Chomsky was incomprehensible and his discussion of Mary Shelley was interesting but largely irrelevant. His dives into philosophy were equally unappealing. However his discussions of the potential for gene editing and the ethical and legal implications were very good. Overall, despite the faults, I can recommend this book to anyone with a background in biology who wants to learn more about the subject.
