Cleared Hot: A Story of The Battle of Observation Post 4, by Monte L. Witcher

"Cleared Hot is a true story told by the author about his travels through U.S. Marine Corps boot camp, mission of service school, until finally landing in the elite front line combat unit, known as Delta Company Third Light Armored
Infantry, during the first Gulf War. Travel back in time to 1990-1991, as Delta Company enters Operation Desert Shield. Here, the essence of living in the desert is captured in a rare
glimpse by Light Armored Vehicle crewman Monte L. Witcher. Witness Delta Company grow and master the art of desert warfare under the leadership first of Lieutenant Scott Williams and finally of Captain Roger “Rock” Pollard,
into what is revered as perhaps the finest mechanized unit ever unleashed on the battlefield, earning the nickname . . . Wolfpack. As one reads into the ever-intensifying story, the book culminates with the Battle of Observation Post 4. A historical U.S. Marine Corps battle, where a company of LAV-25s was reinforced by tow rocket variants and logistic
support, slug it out with an Iraqi tank regiment headed straight out of Kuwait’s side of the boundary line known as “the Berm.” The unsuspecting Delta Company is caught by surprise by the swiftly advancing Iraqis, who run directly into them at the gates of Observation Post 4, attempting to penetrate into Saudi Arabia with a massive assault
force comprised of over eighty main battle tanks and reinforced infantry units. Leaping into action at 2100 on January 29, 1991, Delta Company begins a massive firefight with heavy tanks. For a time, it looks as though
the situation is grim and could turn into a catastrophe, as Delta Marines were outnumbered 100 to 1. Yet under the masterful battlefield command of Captain Roger “Rock” Pollard as well as Lieutenant Scott Williams directing close air support, the battle takes incredible twists and turns and
winds through ups and downs. While reading, Witcher allows his readers to live a “play-by-play” account of the battle. One may follow along with the Delta Company as Witcher was able to record on tape the entire battle while engaged at the driver’s duty from inside his LAV-25, which was battle named Steel Justice. This is the only recording in existence of the actual fighting at OP 4 as U.S. Marines took on Iraqi forces for the first time in a ground engagement."

Cleared Hot Review
By Nancy Darst
If you have ever wondered what it was like to be in the real battle for your life, with all types if ammo flying by your head, and dear marines, friends of yours being incinerated in the blink of an eye; ever wonder what its like to be a real United States Marine in the heat of battle, then read Cleared Hot!!!
It should be a must read for every citizen, high school or college student in the United States. The author, Monte Witcher and US Marine, will take you behind enemy lines and give you a front seat look at the action in Kuwait, during Desert Storm.
Delta company was surprise attacked in the middle of the night and out numbered 100 to one. Learn the true courage of a US Marine as they fight the good fight against overwhelming odds, earning them the name Wolfpack.
The author makes you feel as if you were in the seat next to him during battle! A page-turner to be sure!!
Folks, when you are told that freedom does not come free, know its true.....or all gave some and some gave all, that is also true. I wonder how many of us would have the courage that these US Marines had to defend what was right, to actually put our life on the line, knowing that it could be you or I that is incinerated at any second?? I dare say, not enough of us!!! The next time you see a US Marine, say thank you, or better yet, fill their tank, pay for their meal, etc, etc. You see, children never got to meet their daddys and wives never saw their husbands again, all for you and I and our freedom!!!
Never forget our United States Marines!!!

Most sincerely,
Nancy McAdams Darst

Cleared Hot....takes you into the fight!
By Mountainrigger
As the older brother of the Author and a former Marine myself....I thought I knew all there was to know about Monte's experiance during his deployment with 3rd Light Armored Recon during Operation Desert Storm....it's been 20 years...and there had been times when he had shared many of the events with me.....but as I read my Brothers account of the firey Battle at Observation Post #4....I had to set the book down several times to wipe tears from my eyes...I wanted to propel myself back in time and snatch my baby brother from the hell he and his fellow Marines found themselves in that night as hot steele cut the air and brave young men fought for their lives...and sadly many of Monte's brothers in arms fell there in the sands of the Kuwaiti desert.....I know my Brother loved those men....and he and they deserve to have their story told by one of their own......"Cleared Hot".....is one Marines story....but it is the voice of many...Semper Fi!

I Now Know How My Brothers Fell
By K. Bryant
I went to LAV School with Sgt. Mongrella & Lcpl. Linderman. We were separated when I went to 1st LAI and they went to 3rd. The next time I saw them, I was on my way to the Persian Gulf aboard the USS Germantown... Their faces were on the TV news clips that the ship received from time to time. Many of us knew the fallen Marines from WolfPack and many tears were shed that night by us. My life was also forever changed that night... I think of them often. I never knew the full story until I came across this book today... Memorial Day 2013. Thank you for telling this amazing story. Monte Witcher tells the story in a way that made me feel like I was there... once again many tears were shed and yet somehow, at the same time I feel a certain amount of healing. I'm grateful and proud... but not surprised at the courage and skill of my fellow Marines. If you want to read about real heroes, read this book!... Semper Fi!!!

A History of Western Architecture, 5th edition, by David Watkin

In his highly acclaimed reference work David Watkin traces the history of western architecture from the earliest times in Mesopotamia and Egypt to the eclectic styles of the twenty-first century. The author emphasizes the ongoing vitality of the Classical language of architecture, underlining the continuity between, say, the work of Ictinus in fifth-century BC Athens and that of McKim, Mead and White in twentieth-century New York. Authoritative, comprehensive and highly illustrated, this fifth edition has been expanded to bring the story of western architecture right up to date and includes a separate final chapter on twenty-first century developments.

Expanded Version of an Old Favorite
By John Matlock
This is the fourth edition of this monumental book. This edition has been expanded to include additional coverage of Egyptian and Mesopotamian architecture at the early end, and the coverage of the architecture of the twentieth century has been greatly expanded. There is also expanded coverage of the architecture from Asia, particular that of Japan.

The book now has 50 color and 931 black and white photographs. Most of these are from Europe, but the rest of the world does have some coverage.

The increased size and scope of the book now presents a continuous coverage of the evolution of architecture from the earliest building, about 5000 B.C. to buildings constructed in the twenty first century. It is the most complete single volume history of architecture available and it's new edition is greatly improved.

The author, David Watkin is Professor of the History of Architecture at the University of Cambridge.

Great price for a great piece of knowledge.
By yaknow05
This book is tough to read, especially if you don't know anything about architecture. But with a tough path ahead of me, I appreciate the thoroughness of the text. Well-presented photos along with these text makes for an interesting read. I have only read up to chapter 3, and I am already excited to learn more about the history of architecture.

The vendor I got mine from was also very quick in the mailing process.

improper details
By svitllana
First time I read D. Watkin's book almost 10 years ago. Basically, it is a comprehensive and detailed throughout. However, I was struck by one 'little' improper detail - instead of the picture of Haja Sophia (St. Sophia Cathedral) in Kiev built in 11 cent. I found a picture of a Neo-Byzantine style church which dates to the beginning of the 20 cent. I'm just curious is it that difficult for a recognized art historian to tell the difference? Or it's just a matter of 'neglegence'? In 1996 I wrote a letter to the Publishing house and recieved a nice answer saying that in the case of the third print they would definitely check and replace the picture with the proper one. No changes so far.

Opera-Comique: A Sourcebook, by Robert Ignatius Letellier

Opera-comique, like grand opera a specifically French genre of opera, emerged from the political changes and intellectual discussion that played a recurrent role in determining the nature of artistic expression and production in Paris. Opera-comique is distinguished by its use of spoken dialogue to link the arias and sung parts, and its more restrained use of recitatives. This form of opera emerged out of the popular entertainments, called opera-comiques en vaudevilles that were a feature of the popular suburban theatres held at the spring and autumn fairs (foire) of St Germain and St Laurent (and to a lesser extent at the comedy playhouse, the Comedie Italienne). The similarity of the types of entertainment provided by both the Comedie-Italienne and the two seasonal fairs brought the two companies ever closer, until, decisively, on 3 February 1756 they amalgamated, and found a theatre for their joint productions, the Hotel Bourgogne. Their type of entertainment, combining existing popular tunes with spoken sections, grew rapidly in popularity and soon lent its generic name to this house. The house, regardless of is changing venue, would become inextricably associated with the genre acted there, and known as the Opera Comique. The genre should not, however, be confused with the 18th century French version of the Italian opera buffa, which also emerged in the mid-century, and rapidly spread to France where it was known as opera bouffon. This is again different again from the 19th-century opera-bouffe which came to have special associations with the new form of operetta. The genre of opera-comique exercised a powerful popular appeal because of its unique fusion of fixed musical form with fluid improvised dialogue. The well-known airs of the day, invariably strophic, came to be the staple medium of artistic expression for the genre - the couplets. French and Belgian composers readily adapted the new and increasingly dynamic variety of opera-comique, and soon established its hegemony in the Parisian and provincial theatres. This astonishing development was by no means always associated with comic subject matter. The genre of opera-comique, despite its name, was not necessarily comic or light in nature. Indeed, the most famous of operas-comiques, Bizet's Carmen, is a tragedy. Increasingly, earlier composers in this genre - like Francois-Andre Philidor (Tom Jones, 1765), Pierre-Alexandre Monsigny (Le Deserteur, 1769), Andre Gretry (Richard Coeur de Lion, 1784), Luigi Cherubini (Lodoiska, 1791; Les Deux Journees, 1800) and Etienne-Nicolas Mehul (Joseph, 1807) - were concerned with more serious content, and produced works full of progressive musical innovation that made ever greater appeal to audiences beyond the borders of France (especially the famous type of the 'rescue opera' that emerged from the political storm and stress surrounding the French Revolution). The genre, with its unique mixture of comedy and drama, its captivating musical fluency, its increasing handling of serious or Romantic themes - expertly crafted by its most famous librettist Augustin-Eugene Scribe (1791-1861) - became universally popular in the masterpieces of its heyday during the fifty years between 1820 and 1870: Adrien Boieldieu's La Dame blanche (1825), Daniel-Francois-Esprit Auber's Fra Diavolo (1830) and Le Domino noir (1837), Ferdinand Herold's Zampa (1831) and Le Pre aux clercs (1832), Fromental Halevy's L'Eclair (1835) and Ambroise Thomas' Mignon (1866). The history of the opera-comique between 1762 and 1914 reflects the political and cultural life of France from the last days of the ancien regime, the tumult of the Revolution and Napoleonic era, through the on-going saga of France's search for the right mode of governance, the decisive battle between monarchy and republicanism, that found its watershed not in the revolutions of 1789, 1830 and 184

A Unique resource
By ElaineT
As far as I know this is the only comprehensive survey of the repertoire of the Paris Opera-Comique in English - and comprehensive it certainly is! It is a fascinating record of the works that passed across the French opera-comique stage for over a century and a half - some well-known, others now lost in obscurity. The works are listed under their composer, and the details given for each opera of performance history, plot synopsis etc are hugely interesting. The inclusion of contemporary reviews, in particular, throws a revealing and sometimes amusing light on the culture, presuppositions and manners of the time. The `Chronology' section -a list of first performances by date - is an excellent resource, as is the index of singers, running into hundreds of names, and providing an invaluable record of the artists who created the roles, some known, but many now remote and forgotten. The collection of portraits of composers, librettists and theatre buildings is also of great interest. For anyone interested in the history of French opera and culture, this book is a must.

a translation of Clement and Larousse?
By Steve
I wonder if this book is much more than a translation of Clement and Larousse "Dictionnaire des Operas"? The "Look Inside" "Surprise Me" brought me to the page for Halevy's "Les Treize" where I read the following. "The fundamental idea of the plot is quite unacceptable, but this did not hamper Halevy from writing a score remarkable for delicacy of orchestration, originality of rhythm, and novelty of accompaniment." Clement and Larousse write the following (sorry about the lack of accents). "La donnee du livret est presque intolerable; mais elle n'a pas empeche Halevy d'ecrire une partition remarquable par la delicatesse de l'orchestration, l'originalite des rythmes, la nouveaute des effets d'accompagnement." In the short section of the book I examined there were other passages which were more-or-less direct translations. I saw no sign of quotation marks or reference to Clement and Larousse. If you can read French, Clement and Larousse is fascinating.

A Captivating and Utterly Thrilling YA Mystery Novel!
By Stephanie Ward
4.5 Stars

'Dead Girls Don't Lie' is a captivating and thrilling young adult mystery novel that will have you eagerly turning the pages for more. The story is told by Jaycee, a teenage girl who's best friend, Rachel, has just been murdered. Things like that didn't happen in their small town of Lake Ridge. Although Rachel had been acting strange and they had a falling out a few months before her death, Jaycee is taking her friend's murder incredibly hard. She vows to herself and to Rachel that she'll find out what happened that night. Little does she know that looks can be deceiving, and the worst danger out there might be right in your own town.

I absolutely love thrillers and this novel did not leave me disappointed. The plot was written in a complex way that intertwined several smaller story lines, laced with questions and no answers. It was a complete enigma for me to unravel, unlike most other novels of the genre. Usually I like to figure out what really happened before the characters do, but I was taken completely by surprise with this one. The entire story had me guessing and just when I thought I had a piece of the puzzle in place - the author only shifted gears and proved me wrong. I loved that I couldn't solve the mystery until the end of the book along with the characters - the thrill of the chase and putting the pieces together was one of the things I loved the most about this novel. The characters were well written as well, especially that of Jaycee - our heroine. We get to see the entirety of her character - her strengths, flaws, intelligence, love for her friends, and her overwhelming guilt. Although she's broken and blames herself for not saving Rachel that night, Jaycee promises to find out who killed Rachel and why. The other characters in the novel were rounded as well, even the sideline characters and the memories of Rachel that Jaycee had were detailed. As I mentioned earlier, the writing was exceptional and the book had a naturally urgent pace that kept me eagerly devouring each page in the attempt to figure out what was really going on. There are tons of twists and turns that the reader won't see coming, which I think definitely adds to the appeal of the book. The entirety of the book - descriptions, settings, characters, occurrences - were so well detailed and vivid that I felt like I was right beside Jaycee as it was all happening. Needless to say, I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more books by this author in the future. Very highly recommended for fans of mysteries and thrillers!

Couldn't put it down!
By SE Falter
I loved how captivating the story was and how quickly I couldn't put it down. It was so unpredictable and I really appreciate that! I also liked how she tied in a different culture and addressed issues of discrimination. I think every YA could benefit from those lessons in the book, even though they were subtle.

One thing I appreciate as a parent is being able to recommend the book to my children knowing that there isn't inappropriate romance scenes. She tastefully handles the romance in the book.

The end was surprising and tender. I loved the last chapter!

Dead Girls Don't Lie
By Hannah @ Paperback Treasures
Dead Girls Don't Lie is one of those books where I can't really think of anything to say other than, "Ehh. It was okay." I guess I enjoyed reading it, but I wouldn't be sad to have missed out on it. The premise sounded promising, and I don't have any huge complaints, but there also wasn't anything that would make me really love this story.

I know a lot of people complained about the main character, saying she was too naïve, but that didn't really bother me because it's realistic: the story acknowledges that she's naïve, and I know we'd all like to think we'd be smarter in a situation like this, but I'm pretty sure I'd be oblivious too, so I can't really fault Jaycee for that. But while that didn't really bother me, I wasn't a huge fan of Jaycee, either; not because there's anything wrong with her, but because she's just kind of boring. She's the stereotypical good girl that does no wrong and goes to church every week (the religion aspect was a bit much for me, too). She was okay, but I just wish there had been something more to her.

The mystery was pretty good, but for some reason, I didn't get as into it as I usually do with murder mysteries. I think part of that is because Jaycee doesn't actually find out anything at all; she's really not much of a detective. Things just kind of happen to her, and people tell her what happened. While there is definitely an element of danger, it didn't feel as real as in mysteries where the main character was actually actively figuring things out.

I still don't know how to feel about the solution. I had kind of already figured it out early on, but then I thought that would be too obvious... but it did turn out to be true. I thought the revelation wasn't a hundred percent in accordance to the way the person who did it was acting throughout the novel, even if it is explained at the end. The solution is also kind of drawn out: we find out who did it, but then it takes a whiiile for Jaycee to really understand what happened and for anything to be resolved, and the final action scene seemed kind of staged. I think this ending was an interesting solution, but the psychology behind it was too complex and not actually explored enough for this to work.

In the beginning of the novel, the story tries really hard to be about race. I think this was a good attempt, but it wasn't done thoroughly enough, and the way Jennifer Shaw Wolf went about it just made me feel kind of icky. The novel is set in a small, white town that has some Mexican immigrants, and there's a lot of racism towards these "outsiders." So of course, when Rachel gets murdered, everyone assumes it was one of those Mexican gangbangers, and Jaycee tries to relieve some of those racial tensions. But as much as it's trying to criticize the Mexican gangbanger stereotype, the story doesn't really do all that much to disprove it: honestly, the portrayal of the Mexican characters is pretty stereotypical, along with the bad Spanglish dialogue that was so obviously written by a white person. It also made me feel really weird how Jaycee is supposed to be the one "good" white person, as if she should get brownie points for crossing to the other side of the river and talking to the Mexicans. The whole topic just kind of goes away towards the end, without any more exploration. Really, it was a nice try, but it just doesn't go in-depth enough to really do anything.

That's basically all I have to say about Dead Girls Don't Lie; it's an okay novel all around. If the story sounds interesting to you, go for it - there's nothing horribly bad about it. But there was also nothing that would make me really love it. All in all, it was just a very underwhelming read.

Who Was The Mother of Harlots? Drunk with the Blood of the Saints, by Steve Temple

Babylon in Revelation, is a key to proper understanding of "the end times." She is described as "the mother of harlots." Most commentators ignore the OT marriage covenant language of the term "harlot." It is assumed that a "harlot" was simply an immoral woman. Not so! As Temple effectively shows, in scripture, a harlot was a wife who had become unfaithful. This has tremendous implications for the dating and understanding of Revelation. Temple does a marvelous job of documenting the temporal setting, the language of marriage covenant and thus, the proper identity of the harlot city Babylon. This is a tremendously important book that you definitely want in your library!

Great resource
By J. Mccormack
This is a very nice, concise treatise looking back at the history of God's dealings with his people Israel and Judah, and all of the times of covenant breaking, idolatry, harlotry, etc. that they had performed time and time again, and how God promised over and over again how they would be brought under judgment for it. To me this is great to have, a single shorter work detailing all of the issues of the people over the centuries in one place.

Taking this detailed history, and comparing it to the words spoken to that harlot "Babylon" in Revelation, their is only one viable conclusion you can make; Revelation's mystery Babylon, the mother of harlots, drunk with the blood of the martyr's, is Israel, and specifically those in Jerusalem at the time of the prophecy being spoken.

In the end, this book shows how Revelation is speaking directly about the divine judgment that came upon those old covenant people in AD 70. Good stuff.

Great book! Short but to the point.
By leroy martell
I enjoyed this book. In light of the overwhelming information on this subject I have to agree with the author as to who the harlot in the book of Revelation is. To many valid points and to much scriptural evidence to deny it was apostate Israel.
