Strategies for Preparing for LEED AP BD+C ExamThere are several strategies for preparing for LEED AP BD+C Exam:

1. Bare bone strategy:
This strategy is bold, risky, but effective, low cost, and takes the least amount of time. You can spend about two weeks to prepare and pass the exam:

a. Download and read the latest candidate handbook for LEED AP BD+C Exam
b. Study the FREE PDF files listed at the end of the latest candidate handbook for LEED AP BD+C Exam (About 20% to 30% of the test content will come from these materials).
c. Study my books, LEED v4 BD&C Exam Guide and LEED v4 BD&C Mock Exam (Covers the fundamental and most important information of the remaining 70% to 80% of test content will come from these materials).
d. Do NOT buy or read the USGBC reference guide AT ALL

Pros:
a. Save time and money and still have a good chance of passing. In fact, a number of my readers did pass the exam using this approach.
b. You can prepare and pass the exam in about two weeks.

Cons:
a. Your score may not be as high as you want since you COMPLETELY skip the USGBC reference guide (probably range from 170 to 180).
b. You may feel nervous during the real exam. You may swear that you fail in the exam, and end up passing. You may have no clue why you pass but I know why you pass the exam though: my books cover the fundamental and most important information of the exam and set up a solid foundation for your LEED knowledge.

2. Middle of the road strategy:
This strategy is exactly the same as bare bone strategy, except that you do the following extra things:

a. Buy or read portion of the USGBC reference guide to supplement my two books:
Only refer to or read the USGBC reference guide for items you have questions, or for detailed information not covered by my books such as the "Behind the Intent" and "Step-by-Step Guidance" Sections and Calculations. I skip these sections in my book, LEED v4 BD&C Exam Guide because it takes too much time for you to read the information, and I think you should be able to handle most of the tasks covered in these sections if you MASTER the other sections.
b. Do a few extra sets of mock exams.

Pros:
a. Save time and money and still have an excellent chance of passing. In fact, many readers did pass the exam using this approach.
b. You can prepare and pass the exam in about two to four weeks.

Cons:
a. Your score may not be as high as you want (probably range from 170 to 185).
b. You may still feel nervous during the real exam.


3. Comprehensive strategy:
This strategy is exactly the same as bare bone strategy, except that you do the following extra things:

a. Buy or read the USGBC reference guide from cover to cover several times.
b. Write your own notes or create your own spread sheets based on the USGBC reference guide.
c. Do every set of mock exams that you can find.

Pros:
a. You have an excellent chance of passing if you can REALLY read the reference guide. In fact, several readers did pass the exam using this approach.

Cons:
a. Your score may be either very high or very low (probably either range from 180 to 200, OR fail).
b. You need to spend two months or more to prepare and pass the exam.
c. You drag the exam prep process too long, and become tired of reading the USGBC reference guide, OR you can NOT find enough time to read the reference guide, and you end up failing the exam.

If you can pass the specialty exam, you should be able to pass the LEED Green Associate Exam. Make sure you download the PDF files listed in the candidate's handbook and peruse them.

BD+C V4 exam prep

I have just passed LEED BD+C V4 exam. Thanks to BD+C Mock Exam.

It gives a good overview and strategies to take the exam.

Exam questions included in book gives a comprehensive overview and helps prepare what to expect in exam.

Gets the job done...

This is a solid practice test for the LEED AP BD&C exam. There are two tests in the book...the first test is the same GA mock exam as the one in the GA Mock Exam book(so definitely no need to buy BOTH mock exam books, just the BD&C). The second test in the book is the BD&C one. It is somewhat harder than the actual exam (which I passed). The answer explanations in the back are well explained!! It does ask a significant amount of refrigerant questions though...which there might have been two on the actual exam (but the heads up the book provided was appreciated).

This book asks questions like:
(Choose 3):
A. Answer 1
B. Answer 2
C. Answer 3
D. Answer 4
E. Answer 5

While the exam asks questions like:
(Choose 1):
A. Answer 1, Answer 2, Answer 3
B. Answer 2, Answer 3, Answer 4
C. Answer 5, Answer 1, Answer 3
D. Answer 1, Answer 2, Answer 5

Get This Book and the Gang Chen's BD&C Exam Guide and You're Set

I passed the LEED Exam on the Mock Exam and LEED v4 BD&C by Gang Chen books alone. I just had these two books, and printed out the USGBC/ GBCI PDF's he recommends. I passed both the Green Associate and BD&C portions. All I did was spend a month on the GA portion, then the 2nd month on the BD&C portion using the above-mentioned materials and that's it. I do have experience as a Mechanical Engineer with LEED projects in the past (HVAC and Building Envelope Energy Calculations/ Modeling) which helped on the procedural stuff, but Gang Chen's books cover this also. Get a highlighter so you're more engaged with what you're reading (slowly) and you'll be fine.

Review your highlights a week-and-a-half prior to the exam and follow the author's advice on test prep. The Mock Exam book gives you an excellent "feel" for the test questions (which felt familiar in style on the actual exam), and the questions themselves had info in them that came in handy on the actual test.

Arthur Miller's Tragic Denial

This was going to be a 5-star review. But I have learned this week while reading "Timebends" for the first time -- twenty years after its first publication -- that Arthur Miller and his third wife, Inge Morath, had a son, Daniel, who was born with Down syndrome in 1966. Daniel's name does not appear in the text or index of "Timebends." According to an article in the September 2007 issue of Vanity Fair, Miller had Daniel banished to a state institution almost immediately after birth, and that he thereafter completely excised Daniel from his life. It's heartbreaking. According to Vanity Fair, Daniel, who is now 41, is relatively high-functioning and a very happy, content and spirited person. But when Daniel's mother, Inge, (who was well-known in her own right as a photographer) died in 2002 and the New York Times called Miller for information about his family, he again omitted the name of his youngest son. Inge visited Daniel regularly until her death, and celebrated holidays with him. I wonder how much friction her refusal to simply throw him away caused in the Miller household? Not enough to divide the couple, it seems. They were married 40 years.

In my view, to have denied his son's existence is an unforgivable blind spot for an artist so widely revered and admired for his empathy and his brave stances as a moral force for justice and compassion. As the VF article points out, shame, selfishness and fear could all have been motivators for Arthur Miller's decision. Still, after reading more than 500 pages of musings and meditations by a truly masterful writer -- a man all too aware of his own humanity; both of his talents and his limitations, I feel betrayed.

Much of "Timebends" just drips with elegant prose; Miller spins elegiac meditations on life during the Depression, his first exposure to unfair labor practices on New York city docks and the difficulties he always had writing (the gestation period for his plays was sometimes years). He humbly describes his refusal to "name names" during the 1950s Red Scare, and tells of the pain he felt at having to sever his friendship with director Elia Kazan for many years for having given the House Un-American Activities Committee everything it wanted.

If his first marriage and children never seem to elbow their way to the forefront of Miller's monologue, it's because he devotes so much time to describing the American theater in one of its Golden Ages -- the late 1940s and early 1950s. Miller seems to have known everyone -- not only in the theater but in all realms of arts and letters and politics, but he never sounds like he's name-dropping. And he wisely uses restraint in describing his works in full and in quoting shamelessly from their reviews. Miller also bites his tongue while discussing the failed and rancorous attempts to bring about a National Theater in the 1960s.

And then we come to the chapters everyone was dying to read when the book first came out -- the chapters on Marilyn Monroe. Miller had never spoken publicly about her before "Timebends" was first published in 1987. I don't doubt for an instant that he truly loved Marilyn, nor she him. Hers was obviously an extraordinarily appealing personality, and her beauty allowed him to forgive her neediness and desperation for respect and love for many years. Miller says she was never happier than when they went to visit his parents in New York. There Marilyn was treated like an ordinary daughter-in-law, and she loved it. Miller notes her native intelligence -- which was tremendous -- and her desperate sadness and endless quest for normalcy. He met her in 1951, before she became bigger than life, and he followed her trajectory almost all the way to the bottom. They were married for five years, from 1956-1961. In 1960, making the film "The Misfits," which Miller wrote expressly for Monroe, nearly killed them both. This is a fascinating portrait of Marilyn which was shrouded until Miller decided to unveil it. It's the eulogy he never got to deliver. It's beautiful, tender, and rueful, speaking as it does of untold grief on both their parts. It seems as though Miller regretted to the end of his days his inability to save Marilyn, although there were many others who found they were not up to the task, either.

Tragically, after the heroic efforts to save Marilyn from herself, Miller's well ran dry, and there seems to have been no more compassion or sensitivity to show to his own son. Miller married Inge Morath in 1962, a few months before Marilyn died. Morath was a photographer from Magnum Photos sent out to capture pictures on the set of "The Misfits." Miller and Morath remained married until her death in 2002, fifteen years after "Timebends" ends. And frankly, I got no further than their marriage and birth of daughter Rebecca once I learned of the missing son of Arthur Miller. As Miller did to Daniel, so I, too, turned away from the rest of what had been the story of a deeply compelling and moving life.

Tedious and Disappointing

For such a well regarded playwright, I found the writing tedious. Miller's comments on the times added nothing that one familiar with the post-WWI period would not already know.

I had hoped to learn more about the author's character and inner thoughts, but was disappointed. At times, what came across as irrelevant commentary or details seemed intended almost to obscure rather than reveal.

By 50 pages, I was exasperated and starting to skim, shaking my head in wonderment at those with the patience to wade through all 600 pages of this.

About the only interesting parts were Miller's comments on his plays and some of their underlying themes or motivations.

refreshing to have answers and realize they're really attainable

tom rand gives a really fresh and importantly practical (and data supported!) view on how we're going to fix this massive problem staring us in the face. instead of just mentioning some interesting solutions out there, he puts out exactly how useful they can be RIGHT NOW, if we were to put the same investment (ie hundreds of billions) into them that we do into oil.

he's a fabulous communicator and clearly privy to all the most exciting things coming out of the start up and green tech world.

also amazing imagery, so you dont have to sit down and read it all at once. it's a very very visual work, that i highly recommend.

Interesting Look At Our Future Of Energy

'Kick the Fossil Fuel Habit: 10 Clean Technologies to Save Our World' by Tom Rand is a great book that focuses on the energy problems of today, and the solutions that we have at our disposal for the future. Human beings are more aware now than ever before that oil is running out, and with superpowers like China beginning to eat resources at a rate faster than the United States in their growth, it's ESSENTIAL that companies use other options now when, but NOW.

The 10 clean technologies are: Solar, Wind, Geothermal, Biofuels, Hydropower, Ocean, Smart Buildings, Transportation, Efficiency, and the Energy Internet

I love the beautiful pictures in this hardcover 250 page book, and it's a more positive spin on a problem that has gotten so much bad press.

Defending Theological Naturalism from Darwinism and Intelligent Design

NOTE TO READERS: This review was subjected to a negative vote campaign on Sept 5, 2007. The express intent of this campaign is to prevent people from reading books critical of Darwinian evolution. It is a silly and juvenile tactic that reflects personal desparation, and should not be taken as a reflection upon this book or the author. REVIEW FOLLOWS.

John Haught is a theological naturalist. A product of 18th century British theological thought, he sees God as both independent of and simultaneously within the universe we inhabit. But, he also believes that universe cannot reveal, at least in the strictly scientific sense (which he terms "theory"), any understanding of God. Instead, he suggests our experience of God must be understood by other means of "knowing," namely beauty, intersubjective, affective, and narrative means of understanding. This tendency to separate means of knowing and to find God in some, but not all of these means, is part and parcel of the theological naturalist position that has a strong following in theology today. It is popular because it effectively removes God from the problems of suffering in the world (a theodicy) and simultaneously insulates religious thought from the threat of scientific developments that might undermine a literal reading of various religious texts.

Although Haught clearly supports theological naturalism, he is very concerned by two modern intellectual movements that would seem to challenge it. The first is a pure "naturalism" that asserts nature is all there is. He correctly identifies Darwinian thought as the prime supporter of this form of naturalism. This line of reasoning suggests that since science can find no "evidence" for God, God must not exist. It further argues that to believe in a God (or Gods) is inherently an irrational endeavor. Theological naturalism is also challenged by the intelligent design movement which sees in nature evidence of the handiwork of God. ID theorists claim to find evidence of design in nature that (might) point beyond purely natural causes. Both trends undermine the claims of theological naturalism and this book is Haught's attempt to respond to each.

Against the 'atheistic naturalists' (a term I use to distinguish these people from Haught's own theological naturalism--he simply calls them naturalists and refers to their belief system as naturalism) Haught offers a pair of related arguments. His first, repeated using various analogies throughout the book, is that there are often multiple layers of meaning or explanation for any phenomena we observe. Consider a pot of water boiling on a stove. When asked why the water is boiling, one could argue that the molecules within the water are in the process of moving from a liquid state into a gaseous one. This is perfectly correct. It is the level of explanation that Haught associates with science. Another explanation, however, is the possibility that someone turned on a stove. Yet a third level of explanation may be as simple as "I want to make some hot chocolate." (Haught uses tea in his example, but that's what you get for publishing with the very English Cambridge University Press.) Now, the interesting thing is that these "layers" of explanation do not contradict each other. It is entirely possible that I want hot chocolate and the water is boiling because the molecules are transforming from one state into another. Indeed, he notes, we would never contrast these two levels of explanation. No one says that we want hot chocolate instead of changing the state of molecules. But this is precisely what atheistic naturalists do. They claim that a scientific explanation for life inherently precludes a theological or purposeful one. And it is an absurd argument on the face of it.

That said, Haught's argument for layered explanations does not so much "prove" an entity like God as allow for one, and Haught is aware of this, so he offers an interesting puzzle to demonstrate the intellectual poverty of atheistic naturalism. Our minds, he notes, have a "desire to know" and it is a desire that is not satisfied by illusions. The clever part of this argument is that, if you try to disagree with it, you vindicate his very point. Suppose you question the argument. In so doing, you are seeking the truth of the matter, and therefore vindicate his point. But what of it? An atheistic naturalist would simply respond that our desire for truth is a highly successful adaptation, and nothing more. And Haught, true to his respect for layered interpretations, would not disagree with the argument that adaptation at the very least allows for intelligence. But he also notes this explanation is woefully inadequate. If it were true, on what basis would we be able to justify our claims of truth. After all, religion, which the atheistic naturalists claim is an illusion (or delusion, to use Richard Dawkin's phrase) is also an adaptation, and on what basis would we know that atheistic naturalism is any better off? In short, our desire to know and, indeed, the very nature of truth itself, points to a universe larger than the purely material.

Though clever, Haught's arguments are hardly new. Einstein speculated that the most amazing thing about the universe was that we could make sense of it at all. C.S. Lewis grounded his apologetics not in physical reality, but in our ability to perceive it and trust in our perceptions. More recently, Kenneth Miller, biologist at Brown University, has criticized many of his fellow defenders of Darwinism, and in particular Richard Dawkins, for similar logical lapses. Dawkins claims, for example, that religious beliefs are simply "memes" that perpetuate themselves, a sort of disease of the mind. But if "memes" can make us believe in God, then surely they could also make us believe in memes as well. Indeed, it seems the attempt to undermine religious knowledge with "science" is an enterprise that could ultimately undermine all other forms of knowledge with it. (For more on this subject, I strongly recommend Miller's Finding Darwin's God despite the fact that I do not agree with all of his observations.) In short, atheistic naturalism is inherently inadequate as an explanation for the universe. It is not so much wrong as incomplete. This is, in part, due to the fact that atheistic naturalists dismiss other forms of knowing as somehow apart from the universe when they are very much a part of it. In short, naturalism does not even describe all of nature, much less what may lie beyond it.

Haught concludes his critique of atheistic naturalism by offering an alternative theological perspective. We find truth in the "memory of God" and we find meaning to suffering, not in the longing for an ideal past which science, correctly, tells us cannot have existed, but in an "anticipation" of the future. These forms of knowledge are not scientific, but again, as Haught points out, that hardly makes them wrong. Indeed, on the question of suffering, Haught points out that an understanding of science, and in particularly some of the more horrific elements of the struggle to survive highlighted by Darwin (think ichneumon wasps laying their eggs inside living catepillars--great for the wasp, but not so good for the catepillar) allows us to form a new theodicy, one in which we recognize that the universe is not a completed work, and indeed, it cannot be. Were it, then it would not be separate from God. We as sentient beings can strive to make it better, and bring a unity to creation and God that is not at present there. In short, the universe, and our role in it, has purpose, and this purpose is simply beyond the scope of science to grasp. But the fact that scientific methods cannot detect it does not make such purpose any less real.

Most of the book deals with Haught's response to atheistic naturalism. He accepts science, and indeed repeatedly says he wants to see science pushed to its ultimate limits. Indeed, the very act of doing so vindicates one of his central proofs for the existence of God, namely that we strive for truth when atheistic naturalism gives us no reason to suppose such an endeavor will be productive. But if Haught finds naturalism inadequate, he is incensed by intelligent design in all its forms. The latter, he feels, is theology "in an explanatory slot customarily reserved for science."(p. 60)

This is not because Haught is unaware of some of the problems intelligent design addresses. He readily admits that life from non-life is problematic, and not merely in the mechanical sense, but more broadly in the informational sense. He recognizes that DNA sequences convey information and this information is separate from the physical structure that contains it. This is precisely the sort of problem William Dembski, Michael Behe, and Dean Kenyon attempt to address and which most of their critics routinely ignore. Haught also recognizes that the very existence of a universe capable of supporting life cries out for explanation and he is rightly dubious of the multiverse claims which attempt to explain away the many and growing number of anthropic coincidences in our universe. But, he cautions that we still cannot turn to theology for answers to these questions, lest science later "explain" them and theology should be discredited. There is something to this argument, but it seems rather odd coming from an author who places such a high value on layered explanations. Should a multiverse "explain" anthropic principles on one level, would it really preclude all anthropic explanations? But one suspects that is not really Haught's main concern anyway. Like his 18th century predecessors, his real concern lies with theodicy. How can we protect God from being associated with the evils we see in the material world? He worries that if we acknowledge that God is in some sense the author of DNA, the "language" of life, that we would be "attributing to God not only healthy but also diseased and unfit organisms..."(p. 68) But even as this claim places him squarely in the tradition of his 18th century predecessors like Thomas Burnet, it is well outside the religious traditions Haught is supposedly defending in this book. Does Haught seriously believe that God is the author, at some layer of explanation, only of the "fit" and not of everything else? This is truly an odd claim, and it suggests a weakness in theological naturalism as a whole. Indeed, in Michael Behe's recent book, he confronts directly Darwin's own problem of the wasps and catepillar. That on some level we experience horror in this is undenable. To deny the existence of a creator on the basis of our experience is absurd, a non-sequetor if there ever was one.

But there is a more fundamental problem with Haught's critique of intelligent design. This is that he is systematically excluding design from investigation. It is true that science can tell us little, if anything, about God. But that is not to say that we cannot still recognize design and speculate about its origins. William Dembski's Design Inference attempts just that. And even if one disagrees with Dembski's proposed filter, the fact of the matter is that we all make design inferences in our everyday thinking. Indeed, to purposefully ignore them would be to deny way of knowing, precisely what Haught attacks the atheist naturalists for doing.

And this ultimately is why Haught's argument fails against intelligent design. The search for truth, Haught argues, is intimately connected to our own "fullness of being."(p. 41) Indeed, one of his strongest criticisms of atheistic naturalism is that it arbitrarily limits our modes of understanding. And yet here is Haught, insisting that we cannot consider the clear implications of design in either the universe or life. We cannot do so in the scientific realm nor, it seems, in the theological. And our fullness as humans is diminished because of it. I can think of no greater argument against theological naturalism. Still, this is a worthy book that will challenge readers from a wide variety of perspectives.

John Haugth does a life saving and GOD reviving structured analysis of what's mssing in the limiting physical construct of life as viewed by over-the-top followers of Darwin, otherwise known as scientologists.

Evolution is a inspiring explaintion of what we are now but in the end; the nature of the unniverse, its basic infrastucture, the acknowledeged boundaries of theortical physics and our internal drive to know truth leave ground shaking questions of "why we are here?" unanswered.

The first important step is to pose the right unbiased questions, John Haugth does this with dignity as well as poses potential approachs to derive the answers.

(It could be we humans, at present, do not have the cognitive capability to sort out such answers, it could be that knowledge also has an evolutionary attribute or maybe those knowlegde packets have not arrived here yet..... I hope to survive long enought to know.)

My only critizsem OF THE BOOK is, in order to make key points there is level of redundancy to remind the reader of key arguments, as the arguments border on theology, I found it usefull, but also wearing.

As someone who enjoys all aspects of Formula 1 racing, this book provided me with an excellent look at how the cars are built. Formula 1 Technology offers a behind-the-scenes, comprehensive look at the design and systems of the cars, and how they have evolved over the years. I found the book to be facisnating and educational. I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys Formula 1 racing on a level that goes beyond the track. Author Peter Wright gets the pole position with this one!

F1 Technology Inside-Out

Many such books have been written before, but mostly by people outside the F1 world, primarily journalists. In rare exceptions such books have fallen short of bringing the reader inside the technology of F1, at least not closer than anyone could get through either magazines or other media.
Having been an F1 designer for decades, penning a few winning cars, in competitive teams along side beacons of the auto-sports gave the author an unique perspective in the technology used in F1 until his retirement.
He doesn't try to go all the way back in details or to forecast the future from when the book was written. He just gives an honest witness at the technical side of F1 from the pits, and brilliantly so.
