Ulrich Wiehle is director of cometis AG in Wiesbaden, Germany. Compact and organized with relevant vocabulary

I spent the summer looking for vocabulary workbooks to help prepare my rising 5th grader for the ISEE test. I looked mainly on-line and finally settled on one that I kept in my shopping cart for the longest time. I'd hesitated in getting it because the sampling of vocabulary words on the front cover somehow didn't seem appropriate or all that relevant. So I ended up printing out vocabulary lists from the internet and making my own exercises...

Then I found this. I knew it wasn't a workbook, but the price was right and I was impressed by the number of uniformly good reviews (something I didn't really see in other books). This book is fantastic. It is small - bigger than pocket size but slim and light enough to easily take with you wherever you go. It is well organized and easy to use. Each word comes with a pronunciation key, part of speech, a concise definition that is easy to understand (I always found it frustrating whenever I looked up a word only to find the definition equally indecipherable), a quote from literature using the word, and an explanation of the word origin (Latin, Greek, French, etc.). My son really got a kick out of the literature quote for the first word on the list ("adversary"), from Harry Potter. He is also learning about Latin (etc.) prefixes and other word origin clues which will help him to figure out other vocabulary words.

But most useful of all is the selection of vocabulary. I appreciate that the words are relevant and useful for students advancing in school and in reading. A sample of the words in the book includes: apprehensive, aptitude, barricade, brandish, conspicuous, defiance, deft, disdain, egregious, havoc, imperious, and so on. I'm an educator and avid reader and these are all words that we continue to use into our adult lives. For those preparing for standardized tests, I think this is an excellent reference. I found a few of the same words that are in the sample ISEE test and they appear to be on par with the type of vocabulary that appears on those types of tests.

This is not part of the review but I can also share here how we are using the book in case that is useful for anyone. My son and I cover about 2-3 words at a time and go through the entries in the book together. I'll then ask him about the words over the course of the day - when he gets home from school, while we're in the car, while we're eating, etc. We make up sentences using the words and try to use them during the day, sometimes getting creative and silly by trying to combine 2 or 3 words in one sentence. So far he LOVES this "game" and insists on doing it every night! This has been working so much better than any of the workbook or workbook-type exercises that I have given him in the past.

Not too bad

I gave this to my eighth grader and she read it over in a matter of what seemed like minutes. I asked her what she thought and she told me she knew just about every single word in the book. In response I asked did you learn any new words? She responded that she did learn a few.

Even if there was only a few new words that she learned, this purchase in my opinion is still worth it. Knowledge is is everything and an extensive vocabulary is valuable as far as I am concerned.

My wife and I have always encouraged our children to read. Never give up, there is a book out there if your child is not a reader, it just needs to be found. Once a child finally finds that book that they start to read and all of a sudden do not want to put it down, they are hooked for life. This is why I think my daughter knew most of the words and all the definitions in this book. My daughter loves to read.

Myself, I did not find that book that I could not put down until I was much older in life. Now I love to read. I just do not have a very large vocabulary yet.

That is where this book would come in handy. When reading you tend to pick up a pretty extensive and somewhat impressive vocabulary. If you are not a huge gigantic fan of reading and have a basic knowledge of words, this book could certainly enhance your vocabulary. This could help with writing and all sorts of projects that you are going to tackle while in school.

I bought this book for my 8th grader, upon recommendation from her teachers. To say that we were pleasantly surprised that she carried this book to school everyday would have been an understatement. Her essay writing has greatly improved, her vocabulary has become more eloquent.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone whose child needs help with essay writing (especially for Regents ELA).

N. Travis Triplett, PhD, CSCS,*D, FNSCA, is a professor and chairperson of the department of health and exercise science at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. She has served as the secretary-treasurer of the board of directors for the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and was the 2010 NSCA William J. Kraemer Outstanding Sport Scientist award winner. She has served on two panels for NASA, one for developing resistance exercise countermeasures to microgravity environments for the International Space Station, and was a sports physiology research assistant at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Dr. Triplett is currently a senior associate editor for the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research and is a certified strength and conditioning specialist with distinction as well as a USA Weightlifting club coach.

I love working with Amazon's customer service

The first book that was ordered was damaged. As soon as Amazon was made aware of the situation they replaced it immediately. I love working with Amazon's customer service. They are on top of any complaint and work very hard to make things right. As far as this book, my son loves it. He has correspondence courses and/or textbooks through NASM, ACSM, ACE, ISSA, etc. but likes NSCA the most. Whether you are looking for a correspondence course or just want the book(s), NSCA's are well worth the money. He has gotten so much more information from them than in his other course textbooks so he would definitely recommend NSCA. Although they might be a bit more difficult to understand, in the end, this is the organization that you want to get your certification through and any NSCA book(s) are the ones to order. This particular book is in its 4th edition and comes with Web Resource. Would definitely recommend to anyone in the fitness industry or anyone wanting to further their knowledge in this area.

Very poorly written. It is informative as far as strength and conditioning goes, but very long drawn out and unnecessary speech.

Hint: skim all the BS and highlight the information then go back and read it

Hint #2 - the book does not give information about specific sports which will be the majority of questions on the test.

About the Author
Richard Becker (1887–1955) was a German theoretical physicist  who made contributions to the fields of thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, superconductivity, and quantum electrodynamics. A student of Max Born and Albert Einstein, he received his PhD under the tutelage of Max Planck.

Arguably the text where Einstein learnt Maxwell theory

Yes, this is the result of a research by Gerald Holton, the great science historian from Harvard. This is the latest rendition of the famous Abraham-Becker, which, in turn, descended from the text by Foppl, where Einstein scribbled his doubts. A great book for anyone, though. Crisp, conceptually very sound. Great discussion, and elegant use of the Helmholtz theorem on vector fields ("if you know the Div and the Curl, you know everything"). Very good treatment of relativistic electromagnetism, perhaps the best, very concrete and tied to experiments. Becker was a great science writer. In this Dover edition you get the bonus of Becker's lectures on Quantum Mechanics, very valuable by themselves. I love this book, and have taught from it many times.

Electromagnetic Fields and the Theory of Relativity

In my opinion, this is one of the best books ever written on the electromagnetic theory and on the theoretical and experimental basis of the special theory of realtivity. The part on the quantum theory mantains the same high standard of the first part, which derives from the well known "Theorie der Electrizitat".

The interplay between theory and experiment, the clarity of the mathematical proofs, even the simple drawings that help in understanding some mathematical points, are at the highest level. This is one of the unfrequent cases in which the notion of "classical" applies in a full fashion. I would recommend this book to all those who wish to undertake, at a University level, the study of the fundamentals of theoretical physics.

I love this book too. You can take it with you to a remote island and totally digest Maxwell and Dirac without need for any other books. Very self contained and clearly written. It's a keeper.

Social science inspired view of the bible

"Jesus Before the Gospels" may not be Bart Ehrman's best book so far, but it is certainly his most original. In his earlier works, he explained contradictions between - and within - 27 books of the New Testament by careful analysis of the textual sources from antiquity. In "Jesus Before the Gospels" Ehrman steps outside the 200 year old academic discipline of source criticism in which he perfected, and interpret Christianity's based on insights and research from psychology, ethnology, social anthropology and cultural history.

Ehrman explains why the gospels are far from modern biographies which should not be taken as face value:
"the disciples of Jesus did not actually write the Gospels. The disciples were lower-class, illiterate peasants who spoke Aramaic, Jesus’s own language. The Gospels, on the other hand, were written by highly educated Greek-speaking Christians forty to sixty-five years later. The stories had been in circulation for decades, not simply among disciples who allegedly memorized Jesus’s words and deeds, but also among all sorts of people, most of whom had never laid eyes on an eyewitness or even on anyone else who had. And so, just as there is no evidence that Jesus’s followers memorized his teachings, the idea that everyone throughout Christendom telling stories about Jesus had memorized them is beyond belief"

But how can our modern knowledge on how stories change when they are retold for decades?
"We know in fact that they were changed, because we can compare different accounts of the same words or activities of Jesus and find discrepancies. Yet other accounts are historically implausible, and so appear to have been created in the years of transmission as people recounted what they had heard about the life of their Savior." Ehrman cites many interesting interdisciplinary examples as well as classic studies from a broad range of fields in support for his view. Ehrman also tries to explain how social groups remember, as opposed to how individuals remember stories:
"From that point on, as more members of a group recount this distorted memory, the other members of the group—even if they either distinctly think that the memory is wrong or don’t remember it — feel considerable social pressure to agree with everyone else."

The early Christians "... told stories that remembered Jesus’s past in light of the community’s present. These may have been “distorted” memories in the sense that—for the form critics—they involved words and deeds that did not actually go back to the historical Jesus. But they were valuable memories nonetheless, and no less real to the people who held and shared them than recollections that actually were rooted in the life of the historical Jesus"

When writing about a subject like New Testamant history, repetitions are unavoidable. If you have read Ehrman's earlier works, you will recognize more than half of the repeated from earlier works. (This is the reason I give it 4 not 5 stars). There may be decades between each time new and important written source may be discovered. Finding support from social science for writing about history gives new perspectives. Other fields of history has gained significantly from methods from social history, ever since historians of the "annales-school" started this movement of memory history more than fifty years ago.

Of Ehrman's books my favouries are "How Jesus became god" and "The New Testament: A Historical Introduction to the Early Christian Writings". The newest book "How Jesus Became God: The Exaltation of a Jewish Preacher from Galilee" is great, but not as excellent as these.

In the beginning

In a way, this book may be said to be dedicated to those who claim that the Gospels of the Bible are true because they are based on eyewitness reports for it was because of that claim that Bart Ehrman pursued his studies that led to this book. Jesus the man died about 30 CE. Written accounts of his life appeared more than 40 years after that; there were only oral accounts prior to that. So, Ehrman writes, 'When it comes to Jesus, all we have are memories...Memories written after the fact. Long after the fact. Memories written by people who were not actually there to observe him...They are memories of later authors who had heard about Jesus from others, who were telling what they had heard from others, who were telling what they had heard from yet others. They are memories of memories of memories'.

Since this is an examination of memories, Ehrman provides a chapter on the study of memory and the act of recollection. In that chapter he explains up-to-date studies in psychology and science, explaining the concepts of 'episodic' and 'semantic' memory, and the way our brains use these modes of recollection. Ehrman discusses the types of Jesus stories. There are some stories that recur. They all have the same form but differ only in the details. For example, there are the healing stories in which a sick person goes to Jesus and asks to be healed. Jesus talks to him or touches him, and the sick man is cured. He discusses the origin of the oral precedents to such stories.

Ehrman also discusses the Gospels, beginning with the reminder that 'all four are completely anonymous'. He studies them with reference to a much ignored authority, namely, Papias. He examines how the names Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John came to be attributed to the gospels. He proceeds to discuss the making or construction of the memories of Jesus, and the significance of other writings such as the Gospel of Thomas; and the significance of Biblical interpretation - not just what the words might mean but also why some early writings were deemed heretical and others to be true gospel.

This is a book that should appeal to theologians, philosophers, lay church goers, and non-believers alike.

As someone who has learned a great deal from Bart Ehrman's books and lectures, I must say I found this book rather thin. His presentation of the idea that the stories of Jesus that came to be incorporated into the Gospels were shaped by the then present life situations and needs of the communities that the story tellers came from, is clear enough. His presentations of studies of the ways modern psychology, sociology and anthropology have shown how memories are formed, were also very clear. My problem was that he then only very thinly applies this in any rigorous and systematic way to the stories of Jesus. Instead, he regularly reasserts his thesis at the expense of its development through its application to what I thought what was supposed to be his main subject: the stories of Jesus before the Gospels were written. He has far better books out than this one, most importantly that of How Jesus Became God. How Jesus Became God: The Exaltation of a Jewish Preacher from Galilee
