This second volume of IDW's Alien Spotlight series was somewhat of a disappointment to me, especially when compared to the truly excellent first volume. More often than not, the stories just don't gel here and the artwork is inconsistent.

The Q story is probably the best, and even at that I'd only rate it a 'B'. The Cardassian story was the one I was really looking forward to the most, but it unfortunately rates a 'D'. The Klingon tale gets a 'C+' (the artwork is best), while the Tribble story is just too lame to rate higher than a 'D'. The Romulan piece is all-too-familiar, and so it also rates a 'C'.

A book to read once, but I won't revisit this trade again. Let's hope IDW rights the ship with a better volume 3 as Alien Spotlight - and Star Trek fans in general - deserve better.

A Bit of a Letdown

After the absolute powerhouse that was "Alien Spotlight, Vol.1" I was greatly looking forward to this follow up. I'm sorry to say that I was disappointed.
Like the first volume, this is an anthology featuring one story each about various different Star Trek races, in this case the Tribbles, Q, Cardassians, Klingons and Romulans. The Tribble story I found to be fun, but somewhat lacking, just because it strained my willing suspension of disbelief that a species which, up to this point, had never been shown to exhibit thoughts above the level of "eat, eat, reproduce" should be able to exercise such planning at the climax. The Klingon one was unambiguously good, with artwork, particularly in the last bit, which lent an epic quality to the story. My only complaint is that was already an IDW Klingons miniseries a few years earlier, though I assume that they could only get Keith R. A DiCandido if he was allowed to tell a story about his favourite species.
Some readers may recall that was already a "Romulans" issue in the first volume (as well as two follow-up miniseries), so it seems strange that they would choose to put another such issue in here (I can only assume that this was done in an effort to capitalize upon the popularity of the latest Star Trek movie). This is not necessarily a bad thing, mind you; it might have been interesting to run, for example, a Next Generation-era Romulans plot. Instead, however, the plot was very similar to that of the John Byrne's volume, except (frankly) much more ineptly told.
I had been looking greatly forward to the Cardassians volume, which may go a ways to explaining my disappointment; the protagonist character, although given sympathetic motivations, didn't seem remotely realistic and Garak's appearance at the end just seemed like a total asspull. Moreover, the non-ending that it had was just plain silly; we know that Garak is not going to die in a comic book.
The best in the volume was the Q entry, which felt very much like an episode of Star Trek The Next Generation. Even that one suffered a bit, though; the issue was so "decompressed" in terms of its storytelling that there wasn't really time to build up the plot to more dramatic heights.
All in all, a mediocre entry. Let's have a volume three!

This is the first time for giving a book review. Generally I read others commentary but I had to leave a comment for social work students. I bought an older 6th edition but I highly recommend you get this book. It is sort of like a 'how to' book. This book is outstanding. If you are an undergraduate social work student, you have to read this book.

An awesome "how to guide" for social work

Great "how to guide" that every social worker should have. I wish I had had this during grad school. It's a clear and easy read that gives a breakdown for social work practices, skills, theory models, etc. For example, the case management section discusses and outlines:
-Role and description of social worker as case manager
-Purpose of case management
-Functions/steps (client assessment, service/treatment planning, linkage and coordination, follow-up and monitor service delivery, client support)
My favorite sections; preparing client records, managing time and workload, letter writing ( includes examples), steps on how to conduct phone and face to face interviews, discussion of the different populations that social workers help.
It's so helpful because it focuses on actual practice and techniques rather than just theory.

Delicious, Health Promoting and Soulful Recipes....Love it

I give this cookbook my highest recommendation as I did Trinity's other cookbook "Trinity's Conscious Kitchen." You will find this cookbook is packed with ethical, health-promoting, delicious recipes that are easy to make. There is everything from breakfast recipes to salads with ingredient combinations that you never thought of, to gluten-free pasta and rice meals, to health-promoting desserts to juices and more. This cookbook along with "Trinity's Conscious Kitchen" are my go-to cookbooks. It feels good on so many levels cooking ethically and from the soul, which this book naturally enables you to do. If you have been led to this cookbook, it is for a reason. I recommend it without hesitation.

This cookbook has a special space in my kitchen - I just LOVE it! Trinity's first cookbook was a star and this one is shining just as bright! So what do I love about it? She has a knack for taking the most simple, beautiful, whole foods and creating divine dishes without a lot of fuss or complicated ingredients. Everything she uses in her recipes, she uses often and are easy to find at your local health food store. With this cookbook I have made dishes that I have never seen anywhere else and pleased all types of eaters! Lots of raw options - from smoothies to scrumptious raw treats (the cooked desserts are not to be missed though!!) Beautiful photos, stunning essence and just amazing recipes!

I just love this cookbook

I just love this cookbook!!! Every recipe I have tried is easy, healthy and delicious, not to mention, vegan and gluten free. It has a nice balance of both raw and cooked recipes and the pictures are absolutely beautiful from cover to cover. It is a must have for anyone who likes to cook and is eating consciously. I already bought a few extra copies for Christmas gifts.

A wonderful resource but a misleading cover

If this book had been marketed differently, it would have received 5 stars from me. I struggled with the rating but I cannot understand why the publisher would put a picture of Hulk Hogan on the cover when his name appears only 3-4 times in the book? It seems deceptive as a picture of Bruno Sammartino, Nature Boy Buddy Rogers or Vince McMahon, Sr. would have been much more appropriate.

With that out of the way, I would like to say that this book is an excellent resource for pro wrestling historians. The book really picks up momentum after the halfway mark and tells the story of the WWWF in the pre titan sports days. This book must have been a labor of love for the author and I commend and thank him for it.

I do have one additional quibble- the information about Jess McMahon was fascinating but it seems to get lost in the author setting the context for that time period. It almost seemed like Jess had to be pushed as if he was more prominent than he was to make the premise of the book work.

I'd love to see more historical pieces by this author. I did read his NWA book, which was great as well.

Before Steve Austin, before Hulk Hogan, before Vince McMahon, there was... another Vince McMahon

Impeccably researched, this book details the history of pro wrestling in the 1900's before the Hulkamania and Attitude eras of the 80's and 90's. Focused on the McMahon family (Vince McMahon's father and grandfather), the author digs into the growth of the Northeast territory and all the political, competitive, and internal struggles along the way, including the rise and fall of wrestlers like Buddy Rogers and Bruno Sammartino. It's interesting to learn how these wrestlers came to be champions; many times the titles were determined as much by loyalty and backstage machinations as by their in-ring abilities and crowd appeal.

This was the era when wrestling was "real," meaning that it was not openly acknowledged to be entertainment, and the promoters had little reason to keep notes or proper records. The last major national promotion, the WWE, does little to acknowledge its heritage prior to the 1980's, either. The author is to be commended for pulling together this history in spite of these limitations, relying on newspaper clippings and interviews to compile the facts. At times the prose is a bit dry, but this work will appeal to wrestling enthusiasts who want to learn more about the sport's history and how the WWE got to be the force that it is today.

Great book by Tim Hornbaker. Tim always does amazing research on his books and this one is no different. An amazing walk through the twentieth century and the McMahon Family's rise to power in professional wrestling with the WWWF,WWF & WWE. Truly an informative read and one that people who want to understand how wrestling works (and how it came to be), should read. Great job Tim and I highly recommended this book!

He worked as a copyeditor and/or reporter at three Florida newspapers, Florida Today (in Melbourne), The Daily Commercial (in Leesburg) and the Gainesville Sun, before joining the staff of The Ledger (in Lakeland) in 2002 as a feature writer with a focus on health and fitness.

Eye Opening

We've all heard about workplace violence, but until I read this book I had a rather one-dimensional view of the phenomenon and its perpetrators. Now I realize that workplace violence is often evolutionary and can be identified along a continuum, with many causes and actors. Reading this was a revelation for me, aided in no small regard by the many real-life examples given to support Bill Whitmore's observations.And this book doesn't just illuminate the problem -- it provides answers and a blueprint for building a violence-resistant organizational culture. The survey results add even more value. I strongly recommend this for any organization striving to make itself more secure and successful in today's world.

Being a Security Officer, I found this book helpful in explaining the thought process used in decision making at the corporate or upper management level regarding implementation of security policies. This book looks at these corporate decisions and provides an alternate assessment of the potential for loss due to a workplace violence incident.
